Michael Ellis - Director
Michael Ellis is a Chartered Patent Attorney and European Patent Attorney with an MBA from Imperial College London. His technical background is chemistry.
Michael can advise on a range of IP issues, including patentability, patent drafting, infringement clearance, TM and design registration and exploitation. His areas of technical expertise include chemistry, pharmaceuticals, new materials and renewable energy systems.

Donna Trysburg - IP Analyst & Trainee Trade Mark Attorney
Donna joined Ellis IP in July 2011. Donna is an IP Analyst, whose focus is primarily in Trade Marks, copyright and design rights. She is currently undertaking studies toward qualification as a Trade Mark Attorney. Donna has a broad range of experience in the legal and commercial field including in the defence sector, where she acted as a liaison between project managers and the legal department during bids for avionics projects to manage business risk and to protect the considerable intellectual property assets of the company. Donna also has experience of placements with the law firms Bristows, Bevan Brittan and Allen and Overy.
Charlie Ashworth - Patent Attorney
Charlie joined Ellis IP as an associate in October 2011. Charlie is a UK and European Patent Attorney with much experience in the assessment of early stage ideas. Her technical expertise covers mechanical and electronic technologies, medical devices and renewable energy systems. Charlie has a particular interest in product design. Charlie has experience in supporting Universities in assessing the patentability and value behind student-generated ideas, and has also supported the Powergen Energy Ideas competition by helping to assess the submissions. She co-authored the book ‘Patents, Trade Marks, Registered Designs and Copyright’ for the popular Dummies series and worked for a number of years for an Invention House, where she appraised over 3,000 ideas.
Charlie also operates the patent factory (www.patentfactory.co.uk), which provides IP search and protection services to inventors.
Elizabeth Vokurka - Associate
Beth has been an associate of Ellis IP since October 2007.
Beth’s background is in physics and medical imaging having completed a PhD in particle physics at CERN in Geneva and a Research Fellowship in Imaging Science at the University of Manchester. She is also currently a Senior Research Fellow for the Institute of Social Psychology at the London School of Economics. Beth’s specialism is assisting with funding acquisition and management and intellectual asset and IP management, protection and exploitation, particularly in the fields of IT, electronics and medical devices.
Beth also operates through her own firm, Imaginary Plane Ltd. (www.ip-innovation.co.uk), which provides innovative companies, primarily in the hi-tech IT and electronics sectors, with broad based advice on managing their innovation capture and exploitation including licensing, IP policy and development and infringement risk reviews as well as providing technical due diligence for projects and assistance with obtaining financial support through publicly available grants or via angel or VC investors.
Lorne Byatt
Lorne joined Ellis IP in May 2008 as an associate to assist with the delivery of the Intellectual Assets Centre IA management services.
Lorne is an IP lawyer with strong sector experience in relation to Software, Medical Devices, and Renewable Energy/Energy Efficiency. Lorne has worked as in-house lawyer for Acorn Computers (the Cambridge-based developer of the BBC Micro range of computers and the ARM chipset, among other innovations), Atlantic Drilling (offshore oil exploration contractor) and Voxar (3-D medical imaging software) and has extensive experience in private practice with two highly regarded Edinburgh law firms.
Lorne's particular focus is in assisting with IP commercialisation, especially in the renewable and sustainable energy technology, medical device and software fields. As well as operating as an associate with Ellis IP, Lorne continues to develop his IP commercialisation activities) under the trading name ip-angles.com.
